Guide To NET Preparation

Hey Everyone!
I’m Maham Fazal _ the third Merit Position Holder in NUST MBBS 2014. I also stood Third in HSSC Federal Board 2014. Plus I got First Merit Position in RMC.

So, with that little intro let’s move on to certain tips that I would like to share with you all regarding the upcoming NET Series particularly for MBBS/BDS that will Insha Allah  help you put up enough score on the board.

1. Organize Yourself:
Be sure to keep all your handy books neatly stacked and within your reach. This will help save time.

2. Schedule It All:
As clichéd as it may sound, but a well thought out study plan works wonders. Sketch out a convenient schedule for yourself. This is a must to do if you want to boost your studying hours capacity. I personally practise this habit.

3. Highlight:
Once you begin to study, just go through all the text in your books and highlight what you think seems important. Cut down on long paragraphs and derivations etc by highlighting just the critical points. This is going to be especially time saving for you in the NET-2 and 3.

4. Study Routine:
Tackle only one subject at a time and stick to till it completes, no matter how long. Don’t go about fiddling with every subject. This will just create a mess in your mind.

5. Practice, Practice and Practice:
When they say “Practice makes a man perfect” there’s no doubt about it. Practise MCQs as much as you can and whenever and wherever you can. This will help you perceive the question real fast. Also you will improve the speed and accuracy of your calculations.

6. The Subjects:

What to study?

Well, the answer’s simple. Those six towering hefty textbooks that sucked out your soul for nearly two years are here to stay. Yes, that’s right. No need of any extra book. No keys. No guidebooks. Nothing.  Just you and your books.  And any side notes from some tuition centre you attended.

How to study?

Follow these steps if you’re confused:

  •  Read a topic very carefully. Split it if it’s long.
  •  Revise that particular topic in your mind.
  • Check your notes for any side information/concept.
  • Repeat the above steps for the next topic.

Note: Since most of you are also going to appear in HSSC Exam next year so it is advisable for you to go through the Part 1 books thoroughly whereas revise the Part 2 books fully like you do in your exams. This is crucial for the April test where the days between the Test and Annuals are very few.

PHYSICS:
This portion is mostly numerical based. Sometimes the questions can boggle your mind but sometimes they can be a piece of cake. So you need strong concepts along with knowledge of all the formulae to be prepared for any sort of question. A few questions are information based also so make sure you don’t miss that out.

CHEMISTRY:
Part 1: Again you’ll find numericals from this book as well as conceptual questions.  Information based questions will be very rare.
Part 2: It is ideal if you can memorize all the equations. But if you don’t want to, then you should at least know what products are formed from certain reactants along with any noticeable colour or property. In case of Organic Chemistry, you should know the mechanisms because you can get questions regarding the product formed at the end of the whole process.
The last three chapters of the book are utterly important (no matter how much we all hate them) particularly Chapter 16.

BIOLOGY:
This portion only tests your memory and cramming ability. The more you print all information in your brain, the more you score. No need of concepts as such. Just remember, the tables are EXTREMELY important. Especially the Part 1 tables in initial chapters. I can bet you there are going to be at least 3-4 questions from them (or more if you’re unlucky). Also, be aware of the important dates of discoveries in your book.

ENGLISH:
You need a good dash of common sense more than Grammar know-how for this portion. Sense works most of the times. Try to learn the SAT High Frequency Wordlist.

IQ:
This part is my personal favourite. Really quizzical on the outside but so simple when you get to the depth of it. You must have ample time left for this and you need to be sharp for this. Practise the IQ questions at home from the ISSB preparatory books. They are of the following kinds:
i. Number Sequences (in which you have to tell what number comes next in the sequence. Requires the four basic mathematical operations)
ii. Decoding (in which you decode a total nonsense group of letters into a meaningful word by following an example pattern. Requires the English Alphabets)
iii. Direction Based MCQs (in which you have to tell in which direction the particular subject is. Requires the four basic directions and their mid directions)
iv. Odd one out (the name tells you the meaning. Requires common sense)

So there you have it guys. All the information I had. I hope it proves helpful for you and may you all score great (Ameen). Best of luck!

Minimum score depends on your fsc marks as well. But a safe score is 160-165

  15. Maham fazal... I've passed fsc-1 with 486/550 marks... I scored 978/1050 in matric... How much marks should I score in NET1 to get merit for MBBS ? Also tell that whether I've to study fsc1 or fsc2 to get prepared for the test?
    Plz reply fast.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ideally you should score 165 or more for getting on open merit. And also score atleast 960+ in FSc.
You have to study all the fsc books of 1st and 2nd year for preparation. There is no particular weightage of chapters as the test questions are randomly selected.
    Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Every chapter is important in its own way. Deal them conceptually particularly the organic portion. Like I wrote in my article, chapters 14 15 16 are ignored by most but they are quite important.

  24. Umm this has always been an issue of debate. It actually depends on you. If you know you'd be able to study hard and manage a good score in first year along with second year then go for it. If you're having doubts how youre gonna handle then better leave the option and work hard next time

  25. Mention not plz

    ReplyDelete
  44. That is totally upon luck. There is no weightage for any book. They pick questions at random

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't think you can find past papers of Nust.
As regards to the second question, other than tables, there is no guarantee which topic is sure to come. Prepare all of the books; that is in your best interest. Some questions do repeat in all three tests.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Walaikum Salam. Best tou yehi hai that you prepare all of it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. You shouldn't lose hope that's the most important thing. Stay focused and determined. And sometimes even more crucial than the concepts is the confidence upon one's self and the ability to keep hold of the nerves during the test. Some people suffer only because they stuff up their test in tension. Re evaluate yourself and start afresh with motivation. Dont let one bad experience ruin your life.
I hope you get admission this year IA.
    all the best!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Wren and Martin is a good English Grammar book. You can prepare general grammar from there. And MCAT Chemistry is conceptual somewhat. So focus on the prescribed topics and clear your concepts. Practise mcqs alot. Consult the internet for out of book topics. Hopefully that'll help

  56. I have my net 1 on 23rd Dec and my sendups will be starting by 15th of Dec so technically i won't have much time to prepare like i would like to. So can you please advise how should i prepare in less time? :-/

    ReplyDelete
  57. Tbh there is never much time for a good prep in the Dec Test. The most you can do is go through the books of first year. One book per day. And if you get enough time you can go through those chapters of 2nd year which were not included in your sendups.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thank you so much ^_^

    ReplyDelete

Type SAT High Frequency Word List in Google. And you will find it

    ReplyDelete
  72. Haha Hi! Good to know an ex college mate over here. :D
Although PC Merit is somewhat low. But I would suggest k ap apna aim high rakho. Around 155-160 or even higher. And try to maintain your marks in Part 2 as well i.e 476 but aim for 485 490. That would give you an aggregate of 84-85. Which is good enough for BDS.
    All the best!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I got 465 marks in 1st year and 962 in matric how much marks do I need to get for bds in amc

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hello Maham,
I'm an pre-engineering student struggling to keep focus on his studies. I can't study for long bursts which is required at this stage. There is no problem in understanding or anything just I can't give my studies enough time even though I want to. I usually lose my focus after avg. 15 mins of study after it gets lost in random thoughts. Can you help me on this ? The problem is only in routine days because in exams I study like crazy but it is usually too late by then.

Secondly, My NET-1 test is on 30th of December and right now I have only covered half syllabus of 2nd Year. Does this test needs any special preparation ? If so then how can I prepare myself for it ? I had a go on the last NET-3 for practice and got 87 marks on which I was quite happy considering I didn't know a thing about 2nd Year. But may be I got lucky. The areas in which I struggled were English and Decoding.

And yeah in case you are wondering why I'm still in second year then this is because I repeated 1st Year. I still got unimpressive result of 417 marks ruined mostly by arts. I guess I can't do alot about that.

    Thanks. :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. P.S : I gave improvement in Chemistry and Urdu. It went quite good and hopefully I can improve some marks. And I hope they will be good enough IA as Engineering Merit is not that much high.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Aoa Bilal,
The key to success is focus and concentration. There are people who study 24/7 but dont get marks and there are others who study a few hours but succeed. So its not the quantity but the quality of time you give to studies that matters. Cellphone is the biggest distraction. So try to keep your phone away during study hours. That will help.
Procrastination is a very vicious habit. The best you can do to curb it is creating an atmosphere of study. Switch off the tv. Close the door to avoid noise etc. Sit on a chair with a back so you dont fall asleep.
Yes this test demands attention. Thats why I wrote the whole article. You have to have an ample knowledge of the areas you will be tested upon.
As far as decoding is concerned, I for one wrote the whole English alphabets on the rough sheet and then through the sample code I worked out the sequence. English requires a good vocab and sense of grammar.
    All the best !

  91. Score around 170 is generally considered safe for getting in on open merit.
For acing the English Portion, you need to have a good vocabulary and Grammatical concepts. Though your instincts work better

    ReplyDelete
  92. I have written about that somewhere down below in the comments section. Hope that helps you!

  98. Thanks. :)
I'll try to keep focus. The time I spend on studies is quality time I think but as I said already I don't give studies much time. Last year I really did work hard(perhaps not your level) but was disappointed in the end. I had been topping in English in sendups in Fauji Foundation and Global but got normal in 1st try in board and bad in this one. I don't know why this happened. The only thing I think I need to give a little attention on is grammatical sense. I wasn't able to figure out which sentence is correct. All of them seemed right to me. My vocab is not that much good but I hope it will be fine.
And yes my cell is a big distractor and I'll try my best to keep it aside :)

    ReplyDelete
  99. You should use as many reference shair as you can. And be concise in the short question answers. 7 8 lines suffice. Writing style in the essay or tashree should be gripping and interesting. Use marker for writing shairs and headings. And for mcqs read the chapters very very thoroughly. Grammar is also extremely important. Spare at least 30 mins for essay
